Phu Quoc Catfish is internationally recognized

(MARD - 30/09/2011) Phu Quoc catfish - a new species discovered in Vietnam were identified with a scientific name Clarias gracilentus Ng, Dang & Nguyen and has been internationally recognized. Initially, fish breeding process has been improving in the island district of Phu Quoc (Kien Giang).
Master Dang Khanh Dong, deputy director of the Center for Agriculture and Fishery Extension of Kien Giang province, author of the scientific research on Phu Quoc catfish said the Science - Technology Department has supported over 200 million VND for scientific research on Phu Quoc catfish and a final report would be made in October, 2011.
Phu Quoc catfish is similar to C. nieuhofii, C. pseudonieuhofii and C. nigricans species, but it can be distinguished from these species by morphological criteria, characteristics of dorsal, caudal and anal fins which are not bonded together, long body. Catfish species live in freshwater streams on the island of Phu Quoc, is more fierce and agile than the commonly known species of catfish.
